I have way too much storage on my fat bike – words that would normally not be uttered by any fatbiker. While I generally sport a backpack when I head out to the trails, sometimes I would like some easy access storage.

I have always wondered about the practicality of “gas tank” style bags. Most bicycle bag manufacturers have created their own version of this top tube mounted pouch, including the folks at Axiom Cycling Gear located in British Columbia, Canada.

The folks at Axiom were kind enough to send Fatbike Republic a Seymour Oceanweave Podpack P2.0 for some real world fat testing.

Seymour Podpack P2.0

The Seymour Oceanweave Podpack P2.0 is the largest of the Podpack family. According to Axiom, it is a stable and lightweight bag that sits on your top tube, providing quick and easy access to essentials like snacks, sunglasses, phone and keys.

Some of the specifications for the Podpack P2.0 highlighted on their site include:
  • Manufactured from OCEANWEAVE® 600D reclaimed fishnet polyester
  • Waterproof polyurethane coating with water-resistant stitched construction
  • Polypropylene stiffeners help to maintain bag shape.
  • Zipper pull tabs that close toward the front
  • Soft-lined phone pocket is large enough to hold most modern phones, and doubles as a sunglass pocket.
  • Four velcro trim-to-length fastening straps.

Weighing in at a light 124g (0.27 lbs) with dimension of 25 x 12 x 7cm (9.8”x 4.7”x2.8”) this tiny bag provides 2L (122 cu/in) of up front storage.

Taking a look at the outside of the bag, the fit and finish looks quality and the velcro straps have plenty of length to strap it to the fattest of fat bikes.

Turning to the inside of the Podpack P2.0 you can see that it is lined in a contrasting red material that makes it easy to see what's inside - including the lined side pocket.

Looking back into the larger compartment you will find a keychain clip and bonus Axiom keychain – nice touch.

Mounting the Podpack 2.0

Measuring a little under 10” long, the Podpack P2.0 will not take up a heck of a lot of real estate on your fattie.

Mounting up the Podpack 2.0 is pretty straight forward with the three underlying velcro straps wrapping around the top tube, with the fourth strap wrapping around the top of the steer tube. All velcro straps can be trimmed for a final fit.

Prior to the final fitting I wrapped the top tube with some carbon fiber wrap to protect the bike’s paint from rubbing straps. I’m sure that white wrap would have been more aesthetically pleasing, but I used what I had.

Riding the trails

I’m a four season fatbiker and I ride all types of terrain in all types of weather, so the Podpack P2.0 was going to be exposed to pretty much everything. And to be honest, when I first mounted up the bag I felt that it would get in the way of steering, impede my line of sight and be flopping all over the place.

When heading out on a gravel grind my keys, phone and a snack all stayed put and the large zipper gave easy access to the contents . . . even when riding. As the phone was tucked away in the internal pouch, it was much easier to access when stopped.

Heading out for some fat bike prowling – exploring uncharted territory – the Podpack P2.0 also fared well as easy access on bike storage. I found that the jostling that came with bumping over rocks and stumps and chewing through mud did not cause the bag to open or its contents to get mangled.

I would hear the keys rattle and the granola bars shifting, but they pretty much stayed in their respective locations and I had to do very little digging to find them. The bag did move around some – side to side shifting - but it did not impede my steering or trail vision.

The Podpack P2.0 really shone when bikepacking. Anything I didn’t have an immediate location to stuff . . . went into the Podpack. This included compass, short bits of paracord, zip ties, camera, multi-tool, bug net, etc. Sometimes I stuffed to much in the bag and needed to remove everything to find that one item.

Hitting the mountain bike/enuro trails on a hardtail fattie was probably the least favorite location for the Podpack P2.0. While it still carried the same items, I found the aggressive nature of the riding did bounce the contents around quite a bit. The Podpack itself remained sealed and no contents were ejected from the bag, but you could hear the contents dancing around in the larger compartment.

On one ride my phone actually hopped out of the interior sleeve and landed in the main compartment with my keys. The bag was also in a constant state of side to side movement due to the nature of the riding. The vinyl carbon tape that I installed on top tube definitely lessened the paint scrub.

And while not waterproof, the Podpack P2.0 did keep items dry during light showers. I did not ride in any heavy rain nor did I not submerge the Bigfoot (thankfully) to be able to comment on any detail to its exposure to heavy water.

Final Thoughts

For the majority of testing I found the Podpack P2.0 a great addition to my fat bike. It did not get in the way of steering, impede my line of sight or flop all over the place when riding.

It did provide ample storage, but it has some limitations when riding mtb/enduro trails at a brisk pace. So if you are looking for some easy access, convenient on bike bike storage . . . be sure to check out the Axiom Podpack P2.0.
