Grips can play a very important role in your comfort when riding your fattie in both winter and non-winter conditions. While some bike companies pay attention to what they wrap around the end of the bars, others may take a more economical approach.

You will find that grips can be made from a host of different material including: rubber, silicone, gel, foam and cork. Different materials, combining with varying thicknesses and shapes make finding the perfect grip a challenge.

The MUND grips by Blivet Sports hit the market late in the 2019/2020 winter fatbiking season and Fatbike Republic received a set to mount up and test.

The Grips

Blivet decided to manufacture their grips from a material called EVA (ethylene-vinyl acetate). EVA can be found in products such as pool noodles, running shoes, padding in sports equipment and bike saddles. Blivet claims that the material can insulate from the cold radiating from alloy bars during the winter.

Taking a look at the packaging, other features of the MUND grips include:
  • Locking alloy clamp
  • End Plugs
  • Multi taper ergonomic shape for enhanced comfort

Dropping the grips on the scale they weigh in at 83 g pair including clamps and end plugs.

Removing the stock grips and comparing them to the MUND it was easy to see that they were beefier overall and had obvious contouring. They tapered from about 34 mm on the ends and in the center, to about 30 mm at the low points.

The test beast for these foam-ish grips was a 2020 Bigfoot 1S. Mounting the grips to the stock alloy bars was a simple process that included removing the old grips, cleaning the bars and sliding on the MUND. A 3 mm allen wrench cinched the grip down tight and the bar end just popped in.

On The Trails

I rode with the MUND grips from late in the winter fatbiking season into mid-spring. While I was not able to actually determine if the grips insulated my hand from the cold alloy bars, the theory behind it sounds realistic. I would also imagine that if riding a fattie with no front squish the grips may also trim down slightly on the vibration.

What I did find significant was the overall increase in comfort over the stock non-tapered rubber grips. With the diameter being larger, the MUND were a little easier to grip when wearing winter gloves.

And the overall “curvy” shape of the grips place the middle bulge near the center of my hand which felt very comfortable. There was also a tiny bit of “squish” in the grip that was not evident with the stock rubber grips.

I did not detect any visible wear after being exposed to cold, snow, sleet, rain, mud and the occasional scrape against a tree or two. The bar ends did get scuffed up from being laid on rocks and dirt, but they were large enough to protect the edges of the grip.

When the winter slipped into warmer temperatures I switched to lighter riding gloves and the “curvy” nature of the MUND continued to feel very comfortable. I actually missed them what I decided to take one of my other fatties for a spin.

Final Thoughts

I found that the semi-chunky Blivet MUND grips were a great improvement over thinner rubber stock grips during winter and spring riding conditions.

I felt that the tapered ergonomic shape and EVA material gave me a firmer and more comfortable grip on the bars.
