Amok Equipment | Draumr Hammock Tent

The last couple of seasons I have experimented with different lodgings for my U24O (Under 24 Hour Overnight) bikepacking trips. I started with a small tent and later hung out in a hammock with both having advantages and disadvantages. However, I really started to like the overall comfort of a hammock, but really disliked the lack of mosquito screening in a standard banana hammock.

I started searching the internet and found a number of companies that make hammock tents - hammocks with built in screening and optional tarps.
One of the companies that caught my eye was a Norwegian company called Amok Equipment. What makes their hammock a little different is that when you hang the hammock you sleep perpendicular to the trees and not in line with them. I reached out to the nice folks at Amok and they sent me one of their Draumr sleeping systems for review.

THE SYSTEM

The Draumr sleeping system consists of the Draumr hammock (that is available in regular and XL size and in several colours), Fjøl LW sleeping pad and Borg tarp. The expert Norwegian Outdoor Engineers at Amok designed the items to work together cohesively as one complete system, although you can get them separately.

UNBOXING

The burnt orange Draumr hammock I received comes in a burnt orange stuff sack with a stitched on label and a couple of information tags.

Manufactured from heavy duty 70D ripstop nylon, the hammock comes in several colors and is rated for 400 lb / 180 kg. W
hen stuffed in the sack it measures 9.5 in x 6.3 in / 24 cm x 16 cm. As mentioned previously, it actually comes in two sizes – the regular size for folks up to 6’1” /185 cm and the XL for those who are taller. The suspension straps that hold the hammock to the trees are 98 in / 250 cm long.

A pull cord with toggle c
loses the bag while a hefty strap further cinches it shut and give a place where you can grab or hang the bag.

Opening the stuff sack I was met by a large informational label.

Tucking that out of the way I found an impressive nest of straps, cords and material.

I pulled the hammock out of the bag, but did not fully unfurl it as I wanted to get it outside where there was more space. It stuffed quite easily back into the bag.

Dropping the Draumr on the scale it weighs in at 1466g which is 116g heavier than claimed.

The Fjøl LW mattress comes in a similar type of stuff sack as the Draumr with pull cord and toggle on the open end.
 The mattress is manufactured from 75D Hex ripstop polyester with an inflated size of 78 x 24.8 x 3.5 in / 198 x 63 x 9 cm.

The mattress easily slides out of the stuff sack with two small plastic bags containing instructions and a patch kit. Unrolling the mattress will reveal the inflation bag – I was really curious how this would work in real life.

Dropping the full Fjøl LW on the scale it weighs in at 1009g, while the mattress + inflation bag tips the scale at 969g. The claimed weight is a little lighter at 850g.

The Borg tarp comes in a tidy wallet type pouch as opposed to the cylindrical stuff sack. The outside of the pouch contains a stitched on label and information tags. The pouch is open ended with a nylon strap to keep everything inside.

Just inside the flap is a velcro pouch that contains the 6 alloy stakes. The tarp is neatly folded inside the main pouch with the 6 guy lines and two matchin
g carabiners.

In the version of the Borg tarp that I was sent to review (Spring 2019) the stuff wallet was attached to the tarp so that it would not get misplaced.

The claimed weight of the Borg tarp is 685g while the Fatbike Republic scales read 802g including stakes . . . about 117g heavier than claimed.

The entire Draumr sleeping system weighs in at 3277g . . . almost 7.25 lbs. While it is heavier than my current tent/tarp and hammock setup it offers many more features and is built to an exceptionally high standard.

FIRST SETUP

Before I hit the trails with the Draumr sleeping system I wanted to do a quick test run so there would be no surprises when out in the wilderness. I first popped on the Amok site to review their videos, which were great to help understand the hammock.

The Draumr initially looked rather complicated when completely removed from the stuff sack, but the moment I located the left and right suspension straps (that attach to the trees) it all became rather intuitive.

The Fjøl LW mattress filled quickly with the inflation bag and easily slid inside the hammock.

I climbed inside and zipped up the fly net. Pretty simple one way installation.

Unpacking the Borg tarp I located the tabs for the Draumr setup and draped it over the hammock for fitment and orientation. I also noted the location of the guy lines so I would be able to easily set it up in the field.

While I did not set it up completely, I did get a good feeling for the system and how everything works together. I was comfortable that I would not run into any complications when out in the wilderness.  I was ready to hit the trails.

WILDERNESS TESTING

When I head out on my Under 24 Hour Overnight (U24O) bikepacking trips I have to admit that I probably overpack and take more than I need. Being super-ultra-lite is not a primary criteria for my outings.

With the full Draumr sleeping system weighing in at 3277g (7.25 lbs) it was heavier than my tent setup and took up a little more volume. Looking for the best place to carry it on my fattie, I discovered that the hammock, mattress and tarp fit snugly in a pannier that would hang from the rear of my bike.

Heading out on my first U240 for the season, I had visions of hanging the Draumr from large deciduous trees in a cleared forest next to a lake . . . the typical thing you would see in a glossy magazine ad. This adventure was a 100km round trip to an abandoned US Navy Base and the overnight planned next to a lake.

Newfoundland Fat Bike Fatbike Republic Bikepacking Hammock Tent AMOK Draumr Borg Tarp Fjøl LW Mattress Bike Packing AMOK Sleeping System Best Hammock Ever Fatbike

Upon arrival I discovered a distinct lack of trees within 100ft of the lake and the trees that were available were very small and far from being open and accessible.

I did find one possible area to hang the hammock, but when I hopped in the Draumr the trees bent and I was on the uneven and rough ground. I raised the suspension traps and tightened them with no success.

Plan B involved going back the trail and look for suitable trees, which is not something I wanted to do as it was away from the lake. A more acceptable Plan C involved turning the Draumr into a makeshift tent. This involved
tying one suspension strap to a downed tree that I had secured to a stake in the ground, and the other strap was tied off to the bars on my bike. I weighed down the front tire of the bike with my camping gear.

This setup was far from ideal, but it did allow me to drape the Borg over the top giving me ample room underneath. I was not expecting much wind so I secured it with a few pegs and a couple of rocks.

While I did not get the full effect of the hammock, I did have a very comfortable sleep with the mattress tucked inside the hammock pocket and the tarp protecting me from a light overnight drizzle.

By the time I hit the trail the next morning the tarp and hammock had mostly dried. The Draumr, Fjøl LW mattress and Borg tarp stored easily within their bags even though they were a little damp. When I got home, a day in the sunshine dried them completely.

My second trip involved a 25km ride to a large lake in the Indian Bay Ecosystem. Some online aerial reconnaissance revealed plenty of trees near Number 2 Pond with a trail that led to the water’s edge.

Arriving at the pond there was indeed plenty of trees, but the growth was very dense. There were quite a few larger deciduous trees, but they were buried behind a large coniferous hedge. However, I did manage to find a pair of suitably sized spruce trees to hang the Draumr.

I attached both suspension straps approximately 6ft from the ground, ensuring they were pretty much similar lengths and the tree mounting points level with each other.

Like my trip to the abandoned Naval Base, the mattress inflated very quickly and easily using the inflation bag. It took about 12-15 bags of air to get the mattress to my comfort level – the mattress maintaining its shape, without bending, when lifted off the ground.

Newfoundland Fat Bike Fatbike Republic Bikepacking Hammock Tent AMOK Draumr Borg Tarp Fjøl LW Mattress Bike Packing AMOK Sleeping System Best Hammock Ever Fatbike

Sliding the mattress into the hammock pouch I hopped in to see if I needed to adjust the suspension straps. I felt like I was slightly rolling to one side so I raised the lower strap a little and cinched up both straps pretty tight.

As it was rather windy, I wanted to set up the Borg tarp to buffer the wind gusts during the night. Unpacking the tarp I found the Draumr orientation and attached the first two guy lines about 6” above the Draumr suspension straps. I then secured the 12 and 6 o’clock lines and proceeded to tie down the others in a cross corner format.

I didn’t use the supplied stakes as I was pretty much camping on a solid rock – I tied all the guy lines off on trees. With the initial setup in place the Borg was flapping a little more than I wanted, so I tightened up the lines a little more and it was snug like a drum.

After an evening of trouting and sitting around the campfire until late in the night, it was time to hit the sack. My clean shoes, GPS (Gaia) and glasses stored neatly within the storage pockets in the hammock.

I noticed that there were quite a few mosquitoes and black flies huddling under the tarp with me so I engaged the integrated fly netting. When laying in the hammock the fly net is located in a pouch up near the left suspension strap where it attaches to the hammock.

After an amazing night's sleep it was time to break down camp. As I had tightened the suspension straps pretty tight, I had to bend the tree so that I could unbuckle the strap from the hammock. The Draumr, Fjøl LW and Borg easily stored in their respective pouches and tucked away inside the pannier for the trip back out.

My third outing I decided to revisit the Avalon Wilderness Reserve . . . more specifically Blackwood Pond which was a 30km one way trip. Mapping out a route on Gaia revealed an interesting location where a man-made canal connected two smaller ponds . . . with somewhat promising prospects for suitable trees.

I started down the final hill to the camping spot only to notice the distinct lack of trees. I thought I would be sleeping in “tent mode” once again.

However, there were two old pickup trucks parked close together that looked like they had adequate mounting points . . . so I got creative.

Attaching the Draumr to the camper jacks on the two Dodge pickups, the suspension straps had sufficient height to keep me elevated off the ground without cinching them up crazy tight.

Newfoundland Fat Bike Fatbike Republic Bikepacking Hammock Tent AMOK Draumr Borg Tarp Fjøl LW Mattress Bike Packing AMOK Sleeping System Best Hammock Ever Fatbike

As the wind funneled between the two trucks and there was a slight risk of a shower overnight, I decided to install the Borg. Using the same procedure when camping in the Indian Bay Ecosystem, the tarp was up and tight quickly.

Newfoundland Fat Bike Fatbike Republic Bikepacking Hammock Tent AMOK Draumr Borg Tarp Fjøl LW Mattress Bike Packing AMOK Sleeping System Best Hammock Ever Fatbike

I actually got to use the alloy stakes this time around as there was soil under the grass.

Newfoundland Fat Bike Fatbike Republic Bikepacking Hammock Tent AMOK Draumr Borg Tarp Fjøl LW Mattress Bike Packing AMOK Sleeping System Best Hammock Ever Fatbike

While the Borg buffered the hammock from the wind, there was a gentle rocking that lulled me to sleep very quickly after I slipped into my sleeping bag. Waking up very rested the next morning, the Draumr sleeping system was packed up quickly and easily for the 30km trip back out the trail.

FINAL THOUGHTS

After spending some quality time with the Amok Equipment Draumr sleeping system, in good and not so good conditions, I have the following thoughts in no particular order:

  • The quality and durability of the hammock, tarp and mattress is quite high. There is great attention to detail that you can see in the stitching and the overall look and feel of the gear. While I was not gentle with the products during testing, there was very little sign of wear.
  • At 3277g (7.25 lbs) the entire system is a little on the heavy side when comparing it to a small footprint tent. However, the Draumr alone is comparable in weight to other similar hammock tents.
  • It's best to leave the suspension straps a little on the looser side of taut. Having them too tight makes it very difficult to remove from the hammock when breaking down camp.
  • While the system may be a little bulky, the overall comfort level is off the charts. Being able to lie on my side, stomach or back on a soft air mattress above the cold hard ground is a great way to “rough it” in the backwoods.
  • For my 180lb frame I needed trees with at least a 4” diameter to have secure mounting points for the suspension straps. I discovered that in a pinch the system can double as a "tent" with the Draumr laying on the ground and the suspension straps suspended.
  • It may look complicated to set up, but it's not. Although I would recommend that you play with it a little before heading out to the back country.
  • The inflation bag is simple and it really works, and it works fast. More things in life should be this simple and effective.
  • The Borg tarp is huge and easy to set up. Plenty of room to tuck your camping gear underneath and out of the elements.
  • The zipper for the fly netting is one way. Having a two-way zipper would be a little more helpful.
  • The storage compartments inside the Draumr were convenient and appreciated. Having an easily accessible place to hang my glasses and store my flashlight was super.
The Draumr sleeping system (Draumr hammockFjøl LW mattress and Borg tarp) is a well thought out and designed system that provides amazing comfort when sleeping outside.  While it may not be the first choice for the ultra-lite bikepacker, Amok Equipment should certainly be on your short list when looking for alternatives to the traditional hammock or tent camping systems.
